Urban Space Lighting: BEGA’s Approach to City Architecture

The Role of Urban Lighting in Shaping Human Experience

Urban design is more than just the physical arrangement of streets, buildings, and landscapes—it is the foundation of how people interact within a city. Well-designed urban spaces are not just functional; they foster life, encourage social connections, and reflect the identity and culture of a community. As cities continue to evolve, the need for spaces that promote engagement and well-being becomes increasingly important. Lighting plays a pivotal role in shaping these experiences. More than a technical necessity, it has the ability to transform the atmosphere of a space, influencing how people feel, behave, and connect with their surroundings. Thoughtful urban lighting design enhances safety and accessibility while also creating a welcoming ambiance that encourages activity and interaction. Whether illuminating streets, parks, or public gathering areas, lighting affects the way people perceive and experience a city. BEGA’s approach to city architecture embraces this philosophy by ensuring lighting is not merely functional but an integral part of urban life. Through precision engineering and artistic design, BEGA’s lighting solutions contribute to environments that feel inviting, dynamic, and human-centered. By considering the emotional and practical impact of illumination, BEGA helps shape urban spaces that go beyond utility to become places of connection, identity, and vibrancy.

Urban Lighting Challenges

Urban lighting poses several challenges that demand a thoughtful balance between functionality, aesthetics, sustainability and spatial constraints. Excessive or poorly designed lighting can result in light pollution, disrupting natural ecosystems, obscuring the night sky, and negatively impacting human health. Additionally, high energy consumption from inefficient lighting systems contributes to environmental concerns, emphasizing the need for sustainable solutions.

Hong Kong, often cited as one of the world’s most light-polluted cities, exemplifies this issue—downtown areas like Tsim Sha Tsui are recorded to be 1,000 times brighter than a normal dark sky (Light Pollution in Hong Kong, 2018).

The overuse of neon signs and LED billboards not only diminishes night sky visibility but has also been linked to disruptions in circadian rhythms (Don’t Pollute with Light, 2022).

How BEGA Tackles These Challenges

Balancing Functionality and Sustainability

BEGA addresses urban lighting challenges by prioritizing visibility, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. Their lighting solutions are designed to enhance urban spaces without excessive brightness or glare, ensuring visual comfort for residents while seamlessly integrating into city architecture.

Dark Sky: Restoring Nighttime Visibility

To minimize light pollution, BEGA’s Dark Sky luminaires are designed to minimize upward light emissions, ensuring that illumination is directed precisely where needed while reducing unnecessary glare. These luminaires emit less than 1% of their luminous flux into the upper half-space, helping cities maintain visibility without contributing to skyglow. By adhering to BUG rating standards and CEN Flux Code regulations, BEGA ensures that its lighting solutions align with environmental best practices.

BUG rating in compliance with IES TM‑15‑07

The system for luminaire testing with photometric data refers to measurement of light incidence:

Backlight – Light behind the luminaire Uplight – Light above the luminaire Glare

The measured lumen values are represented on a scale from 0 (low) to 5 (high). These values must be checked against relevantly applicable regulations.

CEN Flux Code according to EN 13032‑2

Percentage of the luminous flux of the luminaire emitted upward and downward in specific solid angles. Each segment has an assigned number.

BugSaver® Technology

Artificial lighting can significantly impact nocturnal animals, altering their natural behaviors. BEGA’s BugSaver® technology helps mitigate these effects by allowing luminaires to switch between 3000 Kelvin and an amber spectrum, reducing the disruptive blue light component. This adjustment makes the lighting less attractive to nocturnal fauna, compliant with DIN EN 13201:2015 standards, minimizing ecological disturbances while maintaining visibility for pedestrians.

BEGA's BugSaver lighting technology preserves the natural nocturnal ecosystem.

Smart and Adaptive Lighting

BEGA leverages smart lighting technologies to improve efficiency while maintaining safety and aesthetics by adjusting brightness based on traffic or environmental conditions. BugSaver® luminaires can be programmed via DALI Device to reduce light output during nighttime hours, further decreasing their impact on wildlife while ensuring urban spaces remain safe and functional. This is crucial for Hong Kong’s biodiversity, especially in areas like the New Territories, protecting local ecosystems.

Controlled switching during night-time hours The targeted control of colour temperature and light output during night-time hours ensures minimal impact on the biosphere of light-sensitive insects, while ensuring that the safety of passers-by will not be infringed upon.

Maintenance and Longevity

BEGA is dedicated to durability, longevity, and sustainable product maintenance, ensuring that its lighting solutions remain reliable for decades.

Innovative LED Technology

BEGA’s LED technology is designed for maximum efficiency, longevity, and performance, surpassing standard market criteria. Their LED modules achieve a service life of at least 50,000 operating hours, with optimized thermal management to prevent overheating and extend lifespan. By using age-resistant materials such as glass, silicone, and aluminum instead of synthetic lenses, BEGA ensures consistent light quality and durability.

Thermal Management: Protecting Longevity and Performance

BEGA’s Thermal Management® system safeguards luminaires from excessive heat, ensuring stable performance and extended service life.

BEGA Ultimate Driver®

BEGA Ultimate Driver® is a power supply unit that was developed according to the strictest BEGA quality criteria, distinguished by countless unique features including: optimal regulation thanks to BEGA Thermal Management®, an impressive service life, high dielectric strength, maximum robustness thanks to an extremely sturdy construction, efficient overvoltage protection, low inrush current, flicker-free operation.

BEGA Thermal Switch®

Luminaires with BEGA Thermal Switch® have a switch-off device to protect temperature-sensitive luminaire components from overheating due to excessive ambient temperatures.

BEGA Thermal Control®

Luminaires with BEGA Thermal Control® have a thermal regulator, which temporarily controls and regulates temperature inside the luminaire to protect it from overheating due to excessive ambient temperatures. In the event of overheating, the luminaires are not switched off, but continue to operate with an adjusted output.

20-year Replacement Parts Guarantee

BEGA’s commitment to sustainability is reinforced by its 20-year replacement parts guarantee, ensuring that customers can access original components long after purchase. Unlike many industry-standard fixtures, BEGA’s luminaires feature replaceable electronic components, allowing for easy maintenance and upgrades without requiring full replacements. This approach reduces waste and promotes responsible resource use, supporting sustainable urban lighting.

Premium Materials for Long-Term Reliability

BEGA luminaires are crafted from corrosion-resistant aluminum, stainless steel, and impact-resistant glass, ensuring resilience against harsh environmental conditions. These materials provide structural integrity and long-lasting performance, making BEGA’s lighting solutions ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications.

Advanced Surface Technologies

To further enhance durability, BEGA employs BEGA Coating Technology®, BEGA Unidure®, and BEGA Tricoat®, offering exceptional resistance to corrosion, weathering, and UV exposure.
